All About Starter Pets
Have you ever heard the phrase "starter pets"? Well, it basically means easy to care for pets that are great for first time pet owners or small children. Parakeets and hamsters are a couple of the most popular pets around. Starter pets can be great fun.
Your kids will love teaching parakeets to talk or letting their hamsters crawl around with them. Beyond that, though, these types of pets teach kids about the importance of caring for a pet. If you're going to let your child have a starter pet, sit down with them and read information on how to care for that pet. What food does it need and how much?
How to Care For a Pet Snake
How often should its cage be cleaned? What treats does it like? What toys should it have? Then, based on that information, create a reminder chart for your child so that he or she will remember to care for the pet each day. The one major negative thing to remember about certain starter pets, like hamsters or fish, is that they don't tend to live very long, even with the best of care.
So, you may have to explain that situation to your child in whatever way you think is best. The bottom line is that, if your child wants a dog or a cat, you may want to test them on a starter pet first. You can always get a larger pet for them later, if they prove that they can handle the responsibility. If not, you'll know ahead of time and can avoid getting stuck taking care of their large pet later.
